Jolly Roger Day Brings $10,800
Some 1,100 people enjoyed this year's "Jolly Roger Day" Aug. 10 to benefit DLITE and the Maryland Coastal Bays Foundation. The money raised will help fund water quality monitoring, land preservation, education, and nature trails.

Among the 75 or so raptor species in North America, there is one avian predator that stands out as the essence of hawkdome. The red-tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, is one of the largest and most widespread hawks in the United States.

BikersPeninsula-wide Biking Trail Due Out In '04
Bicyclists around the shore will soon have access to a network of trails- ranging from 8-1,000 miles- through every county on the peninsula. To help promote low-impact nature tourism, DLITE is working to create a Delmarva Biking Trails- originally envisioned by the Delmarva Advisory Council some five years ago. DLITE took over the project this year.

A new kayak trail south of Public Landing in Chincoteague Bay will complement a Park Service trail running along the western side of Assateague Island.

For those who think winter is why couches were made, Dorchester County has news for you. With its 26,000-acre Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge and county-wide undeveloped woods and marshes, a couch-laden winter would be inexcusable for anyone within 500 miles of this Maryland gem.

Before you can say prothonotary, April will be here and so will the Ninth Annual Delmarva Birding Weekend. The birding weekend celebrates the northward migration of thousands of songbirds, shorebirds and raptors that pass through the Delmarva Peninsula each spring, as well as the birds that call the region home year-round.

The peninsula joining Delaware, Maryland and Virginia boarders two of the richest, most diverse estuaries on the eastern seaboard. With this in mind a union of local, state, and federal agencies along with local tourism providers and natural resource managers has formed an alliance to encourage nature-based tourism and foster a sense of wonder and value for the natural world.
