SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria citrea) If you paddle through the hardwood swamps of Delmarva in the spring, take your binoculars and field guide with you. Keep your eyes open for a small, golden flash darting among the low-lying branches along the creek. Occasionally, the little flash will perch on a branch above the dark water, and you will be rewarded with a glimpse of one of the most beautiful birds of the shore's springtime swamp - the prothonotary warbler. >>> Read this article by Jim Rapp of the Salisbury Zoo. New Package Weekends Put The "Nature" In Tourism DLITE is promoting its mission of sound nature tourism by helping to coordinate package weekends on the Eastern Shore. This year Salisbury Zoo Director Jim Rapp (pictured above) will join DLITE Program Director Dave Wilson (pictured below) to guide "Delmarva Nature Adventures" weekend trips on the shore. Envisioned by DLITE and made real by Worcester County Tourism, the ecotour trips will span May through October. The weekends will include hiking, biking and canoeing trips, accommodations, Saturday lunch and dinner, and wildlife interpretation.
Weekends include: "Tracking Neotropicals" May 16-18, "Breeding Birds of the Bays" June 20-22, "Cycling and Seagrass" July 25-27, "Aquatic Adventures on Assateague" Aug. 22-24, "Migration Exploration" Sept. 26-28, and Hunting for Hawks Oct. 24-26.

Brokered by former governor Parris Glendening, four deals will preserve more than 92,000 acres of forests, farms, and tidal marsh in the Maryland portion of the shore. >>> Read more about this. DLITE Aids Bird WorkThis year, DLITE will be helping out with an ambitious project to measure changes in breeding bird populations on the shore. In 1983, the Maryland Ornithological Society along with other conservation groups gathered researchers and volunteers from around the state to conduct a 5-year breeding bird atlas survey of Maryland. >>> Read more about this. |
