The rich history of African American culture and traditions on Delmarva is made real with historic schools, churches, theaters and hotels which stand today as a testimony to those who defined what the shore is today.
From the Merrill Farm slave house, the Comfort Powell House, or the Sturgis one-room schoolhouse near Pocomoke City to St. Paul's Church in Berlin or Henry's Hotel in Ocean City, these landmarks help both visitors and locals pay homage to those who helped build Delmarva's agricultural and industrial economies as well as challenge its moral and civil inequities. For motorists or bicyclists, they provide attractive and enlightening destinations.
For this reason, DLITE will be helping to fund markers for a number of sites which will be part of a trail system designed to lead visitors to places of African American significance. Envisioned by the African American Heritage Committee, the trail will include six stops in Worcester and with additional funding could expand throughout the entire peninsula.
