Biking Stewardship & Safety Tips:
A bicycle is considered a legal vehicle in all 50 states. This means that
cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of other
vehicles.
Don't operate a bicycle in areas where they are not permitted. Certain
areas are off limits to insure protection to wildlife, vegetation, or for
your safety. Never bike on private property without permission.
Stay on trails while riding through natural areas.
Always wear a helmet.
Obey all traffic signs, signals, and laws
Ride in the same direction as motor vehicles, as near to the right side of
the roadway as possible
Use standard arm signals to alert other drivers of lane changes and turns
Use front and rear lights if the bicycle is used on a public road at any
time when there is insufficient light or inclement weather
Allow extra distance for stopping in the rain.
Don't ride toward the curb between parked cars. Motorists may not see you
when you move back into traffic.
Carry a seat bag, repair kit with a spare tube, a frame pump, a water
bottle, energy bars, money, and identification.
Drink plenty of water while riding and don't wait until you are thirsty
for a drink.
Watch for chasing dogs, especially in rural areas of Delmarva. Ignore them
or try a firm, loud, "No!" If you can't get away, dismount with your bike
between you and the dog. Don't try to kick the dog.
Consider a rearview mirror to help you negotiate traffic.
Delmarva can be a windy place. Cross winds are especially troublesome, as
they can unexpectedly push you out into traffic, or push vehicles over into
your path. Adjust routes accordingly on windy days.
Don't ride in heavy fog or other adverse weather conditions.
Carry a cell phone if possible.
Wear sunglasses and sunscreen.
Wear brightly-colored clothing.
Ride single file so there is room for cars and trucks to pass safely.
Cycling single file has the added advantage of reducing wind resistance.
Watch for gravel and stones at sharp turns.
Do A Bicycle Safety Check Regularly.
Are the handlebars and seat tight?
Do the brakes work?
Are the tires inflated?
Do the tires have good tread?
Are there any loose parts that need tightening?
Are the wheels straight with no wobble?
Have you done this suggested maintenance?
- Inflate tires to rated pressure as listed on the sidewall of the tire.
- Inspect breaks for wear and replace worn out pads.
- Clean and lube your bearings, wheel hubs, the crankset, your chain, the headset and break, shifter and lever pivots.
- Adjust shifting problems by lubing the shift cables or turning your derailleur adjustment screws.
